Lighting guide

How to light a cabin.

A cabin lives or dies by its light. Get it right and even a plain room feels like a retreat; get it wrong and the coziest space reads like a waiting room. Here's how we light ours.

Start warm

Bulb color is the single biggest lever. Look for warm-white bulbs in the 2200K–2700K range — that golden, candle-adjacent glow. Skip anything labeled “daylight” or “cool white” (3500K+); it goes blue and clinical the second the sun drops. Buy bulbs that are dimmable while you're at it.

Layer three kinds of light

Never rely on one overhead fixture. Good rooms stack three layers: ambient (general fill from a ceiling fixture or a couple of lamps), task (focused light where you cook, read, or chop), and accent (the low, moody glow from sconces, candles, and string lights). Aim for at least three separate light sources in any room you actually live in.

Room by room

Put the important fixtures on a dimmer

Dimmers are the cheapest upgrade in this whole guide. Being able to take the main fixtures down to 20% after dinner is the difference between “lit” and “cozy.” Smart bulbs get you there too if rewiring isn't an option.
